House prices and rents continued to rise in Q2 2026

27% of young people lived in overcrowded homes in 2025

In 2025, 26.9% of young people aged 15-29 in the EU lived in overcrowded households. The overcrowding rate for young people was 10.1 percentage points higher than for the total population (16.8%). Among young people aged 15-29, the highest overcrowding rates were recorded in Romania (60.4%), Latvia (54.9%) and Bulgaria (52.8%). Commission Demography Report highlights the challenges and opportunities of Europe's demographic transformation

The European Commission published its third report on demographic transformation in the EU, highlighting both the challenges and the opportunities it presents for competitiveness, innovation, social cohesion and sustainable development if addressed early and effectively. (...)  The report, drawn up by the Joint Research Centre, confirms that Europe's population is currently at its peak; with 450.6 million people today, the EU's population is projected to be around 445 million by 2050, and 398.8 million by 2100, representing an overall decrease of about 11.7%, to a level experienced in the 1970s. Energy efficiency upgrades at home for 24% of people

In 2025, 23.9% of the EU population lived in a dwelling in which energy efficiency was improved in the last 5 years. The largest shares of people living in dwellings with improved energy efficiency were recorded in the Netherlands (60.5%), Denmark (34.0%), France and Slovenia (both 33.3%). (...) People at risk of poverty or social exclusion were less likely to report living in dwellings with improved energy efficiency (17.4%) compared with those not at risk (25.6%). EU population continued to grow in 2025

On 1 January 2026, the EU population was estimated at 452.0 million inhabitants, 706 000 more than the previous year. Aedes: Pas Woningwet snel aan om borging middenhuur mogelijk te maken

De Europese Commissie besloot eind vorig jaar dat het verlenen van staatssteun voor middenhuur ook mogelijk wordt. Dat besluit wordt uitgewerkt in nationale wetgeving. Aedes dringt erop aan de Woningwet eerder aan te passen, zodat corporaties zo snel mogelijk geborgde leningen kunnen gebruiken voor middenhuurwoningen. Door de EU gefinancierde woningrenovaties leveren geen al te grote energiebesparingen op

De door de EU gefinancierde renovatiemaatregelen uit het coronaherstelfonds  leveren slechts matige energiebesparingen op. Dit is de belangrijkste conclusie in een verslag dat de Europese Rekenkamer (ERK) vandaag heeft gepubliceerd. Eenvoudig uit te voeren projecten worden grotendeels gefinancierd ten koste van ingrijpender renovatiewerkzaamheden die op lange termijn betere resultaten zouden opleveren.
