In 2023, the expected average duration of working life for 15-year-olds in the EU was 36.9 years. However, the expected average duration of working life varied broadly among EU countries.  In 2023, some of the durations in the EU exceeded 40 years. The highest were recorded in the Netherlands (43.7 years), Sweden (43.1 years) and Denmark (41.3 years). By contrast, the lowest working life durations were recorded in Romania (32.2 years), Italy (32.9 years) and Croatia (34.0 years). A new analysis by the European Environmental Bureau (EEB) reveals that Europe has sufficient land to expand solar and wind energy without compromising food production or nature. The study shows that only half of the land deemed suitable for renewable energy—excluding natural reserves and high-value agricultural areas—is needed to decarbonise the EU by 2040. De Europese Commissie heeft het eerste betaalverzoek van het Nederlandse Herstel- en Veerkrachtplan positief beoordeeld. Dit heeft de Europese Commissie op 15 juli 2024 bekendgemaakt. De positieve beoordeling is een belangrijke stap naar officiële goedkeuring van het betaalverzoek en de uitbetaling van het daarbij horende bedrag van 1,3 miljard euro. The Statistical Annex to the 2023 Annual Report on Migration and Asylum was co-produced by Eurostat and the European Migration Network (EMN). It provides an overview of relevant migration-related statistics. The first part of the annex presents European statistics for the EU and Norway and is structured in ten thematic areas including, among others, legal migration and mobility, international protection, temporary protection, irregular migration or integration. In 2023, the number of housing transactions decreased in 13 out of the 16 EU countries for which data are available, compared with 2022. This marks the second consecutive year that the majority of reporting countries have registered drops in sales. The largest decrease in the number of transactions in 2023 was recorded in Luxembourg (-43.3%). In contrast, the largest increase was registered in Cyprus (+31.0%). (Netherland - 8,8%). In the first quarter of 2024, house prices in the EU increased by 0.4% and rents by 0.9% compared with the fourth quarter of 2023. De aanpak van hittegolven moet topprioriteit worden in Rotterdam, Amsterdam en andere grote Europese steden. Dat blijkt uit een onderzoek van architecten- en ingenieursadviesbureau Sweco, dat 24 grote steden analyseerde. Met name steden in Noordwest-Europa zijn ontworpen om de bevolking te beschermen tegen kou, niet tegen hitte. Europa warmt sneller op dan de rest van de wereld. De Nederlandse overheid moet ingrijpen op de arbeidsmarkt. Dat schrijft de Europese Commissie in een nieuwe aanbeveling. De Commissie vindt onder andere dat Nederland beter zijn best moet doen om de krapte op de arbeidsmarkt op te lossen. Ook moet flexwerk minder aantrekkelijk worden.
